Mamelodi Sundowns' Denis Onyango links up with Uganda for AFCON qualifier with Cape Verde

Posted: 8 June 2017 Time: 14:04

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has joined up with the rest of the Uganda squad after missing two warm-up friendlies against Ethiopia and Senegal as they get ready to take on the Cape Verde Islands in their African Nations Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

Onyango only departed South Africa at the start of the week to join up with the squad, who were preparing in Dakar, after he played last Friday for his club in their African Champions League defeat to Esperance of Tunisia in Atteridgeville.

The Cranes squad also includes former Bloemfontein Celtic and Vasco da Gama striker Khalid Aucho, who also spent six months at Baroka FC but hardly saw any game time in the Absa Premiership and was allowed to leave the club. He has since joined European champions Red Star Belgrade.

Uganda’s two friendlies against Ethiopia and Senegal were both drawn. The result in Dakar on Tuesday was particularly pleasing for Milutin Srejedovich, a former Orlando Pirates boss.

“Our interest was to balance the game between defence and looking for goals. I’m happy we managed to keep the opponents away. I’m satisfied with the performance,” Sredejovic said at the post-match press conference.
