Stellenbosch FC striker Mame Niang says Saturday’s clash at Baroka could define their PSL Promotion Play-off campaign, adding they will play like their lives depend on it.
Stellies currently top the mini-league table with two points after drawing their opening two games, twice coming from behind to earn a 2-2 stalemate at home against Baroka before playing to a goalless draw at Black Leopards.
Bakgaga host Leopards today on home soil knowing victory for either team will advance them to top spot and leave them in pole position to win promotion to the Absa Premiership.
Lanky Senegalese striker Niang, though, believes this weekend’s trip to Baroka, coupled with the fact Stellenbosch play their last game at home [against Leopards on June 14th], could make or break their promotion dream.
“I think Saturday’s game could define our prospects in these Play-offs,” the 33-year-old tells KickOff.com. “That’s why it’s so important to go full out on the attack. We have to pick up maximum points in this game.
“We have to take the game to them and I feel the onus will be on us. We are aware there is a lot at stake and rest assured we’ll play like our lives depend on it,” says the former Wolfsburg man.
This is Niang’s first outing in the South African promotional campaign. The former SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns player says he was involved in a play-offs battle in Europe with his former club Kongsvinger in the Norwegian First Division.
“Unfortunately, we lost in the [play-off] final and could not win promotion; it was a pity. But I’m playing in another promotional play-off campaign and I hope this time round I can achieve success with Stellenbosch,” Niang concludes.
