Mpho Mvelase feels the past six months with Chippa United have been “the best” in his football career as he put past disappointments behind him.
Having failed to break into the Orlando Pirates set-up, Mvelase returned to the Chilli Boys on a short-term contract in January, featuring in 10 league matches as he helped the Port Elizabeth club escape the drop.
“Play offs and relegation were never in our minds,” he told his club’s website. “We knew that we can turn things around and we did with the win against SuperSport United and Free State Stars.
“It was a collective effort from everyone at the club; players and technical team. The support we got from the management and our supporters was fundamental.”
Despite the narrow escape, the right-back says, on a personal level, he thoroughly enjoyed being back at his former club.
“I look back on the last six months with smile,” he said. “I think they were the best of my football career if you look where I came from.
“I came following difficult time in my life as a footballer. The reception from day one was good and it did not take me long to adapt, having had a stint with the club in the past.”
Mvelase then highlighted what he feels the club needs to do to prevent being in the same situation next season.
“It is important to collect points early in the season so you do not find yourself fighting for survival at the end of the season,” he said.
“Next season will be interesting; we reached the semi-finals twice and it would be nice to take things to go a step further come next season.”
