Daylon Claasen's German club 1860 Munich face a horror relegation

Posted: 2 June 2017 Time: 18:59

The club of Bafana Bafana midfielder Daylon Claasen faces playing in the fifth-tier of German football next season after refusing to pay for a license in the third division.

Former German champions 1860 Munich were relegated from Bundesliga II via the play-offs this week, and by rights should be in the third-tier next season.

But the club’s majority shareholder, Jordanian billionaire Hasan Ismaik, had refused to put up the 10-million Euros (R150-million) needed to gain a license to play in that division.

It means the club now face being thrust into the amateur ranks, the most humiliating moment of their illustrious history.

Ismaik says he refused to pay for the licence because the other shareholders weren’t in line with his thinking on the way forward for the club.

Claasen made just 15 appearances for the club last season after injury sidelined him for much of the campaign, and he is now a certainty to leave the team.
