Siphiwe Tshabalala promises Kaizer Chiefs silverware next season

Posted: 2 June 2017 Time: 12:19

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala has made a solemn promise to the club chairman Kaizer Motaung that the team will not go another season without silverware.

Tshabalala was speaking after he walked away the big winner at the Chiefs end-of-season awards in Kyalami on Thursday evening.

The 32-year-old attacker was awarded the Player of the Season, Fan's Player of the Season, Top Goalscorer and Goal of the Season accolades.

With the club having gone two consecutive seasons without silverware for the first time in 20 years – last in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons – the skipper has vowed to end the drought next season.

"Our chairman is old, he cannot have the 'eish moment' all the time," said Tshabalala, after Motaung used the term to describe their 2016/17 campaign.

"We have to take responsibility and promise him that you have a team that can compete, it's just that we need to up our game. We need to give our best week in and week out.

"The promise never happened this season but it has to happen eventually, we need to persist until we get it right and we need to back it up not only by making promises but through performances."

'Shabba' also showed his disappointment at the team's dismal showing over the past two seasons as he refused to celebrate his achievements on the night.

"It's hurting to go [two] seasons without winning any trophies and it will be unfair and selfish of me to celebrate these personal accolades," he admitted.

"I'm here to create memories and I'm here to win trophies. I want to make history with the team and then individual accolades will come after.

"But nonetheless it happened and I will take it [the awards]. We need to come back stronger next season. We need to compete for everything on offer."
