SuperSport United winger Mandla Masango has explained his role as an ambassador for the annual Nkangala Youth Talent and Sports Development (NYTSD) tournament.
The NYTSD is a programme that mentors and provides opportunities for young sporting talent in Mpumalanga.
In the past four years the NYTSD conducted coaching clinics for football, netball and basketball. This year volleyball, chess and boxing have been added to the schedule, with teams competing in the elimination rounds of a competition on June 10 and 11.
On June 15 the top four clubs in the respective codes will contest the semi-finals, with the finals taking place on June 16.
“I started with this programme in 2013 when we have like two sporting codes,” Masango told KickOff.com at the launch of the event last night.
“But now to see it grow where we have six sporting codes involved shows the magnitude of the tournament, that it’s growing each and every time. I’m involved in inspiring the kids and also to try and motivate them to stay off drugs and alcohol abuse. But I also do more because I’m hands on… on everything that’s been done.
“We have drug substance abuse, especially our youth. They are involved in drugs like nyaope and they abuse alcohol. So, we trying to show them it’s possible to achieve your dream not only by playing football, but by also participating in sports because every single year the tournament grows and we try to give them the opportunity to showcase their talent as well.”
