Tinkler reveals secret to success

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has revealed what he feels was the main reason for his side’s impressive run in their maiden top-flight campaign.
Making their debut in the Absa Premiership top-flight this season, the Citizens bagged Telkom Knockout glory just 144 days into their existence while surprising all with a well-deserved third-place finish in the league, ending just five points behind champions Bidvest Wits.
Reflecting upon the past campaign, Tinkler feels the entire club pulled in the same direction, which resulted in their relative success.
“It’s been a collective effort. We always say that no individual is bigger than the team,” he said. “Everybody put in the work, nobody ever complained.
“We’ve had so many difficulties; you saw the fields we train on. We jump around, from one field to the next, but nobody has ever complained. We’ve all stuck together, there’s been a good spirit and everybody just got on with the job at hand, from the players to the technical team, the backroom staff all the way to the chairman, with everyone trying to ensure that we could provide the best possible environment for the team.
“And I think what we achieved, which was good - and everybody played a part – there’s no individual that can say ‘it was because of me’.”
Tinkler feels the family environment created at the club has kept the positivity amongst his players, which was then reflected on the pitch.
“The guys would go out and celebrate together, and that’s what we’ve created here,” he said. “Everyone seems to enjoy each other’s company, the guys stick around after training and joke in the changing room afterwards, which is good to see.”
The Citizens have been given a month off and will assemble for pre-season on 30 June.
