Ajax Cape Town starlet Grant Margeman talks of massive learning curve faced by Amajita

Ajax Cape Town midfielder Grant Margeman pleased with his contribution at the Under-20 World Cup but disappointed with the outcome of his Amajita adventure.

The 18-year-old was a crucial member of the U-20 national team and scored his side's only goal as they crashed out during the group stages.

The first game of the competition started well for South Africa's young guns and Margeman in particular as he fired home via a deflection off Takehiro Tomiyasu against Japan.

“It was amazing to be part of the squad that took part in the World Cup, scoring that goal felt absolutely amazing, finding the back of the net at what is the biggest level in our age group,” Margeman is reported as saying on the club's official website.

“It felt like heaven on earth, was just an amazing moment for me and after that I thought: ‘wow we can actually win this match and get off to the perfect start’. But, I think we switched off in the second-half, the first 10 minutes after the break is vital, but we failed to keep up with their tempo.

“In all, it was just an amazing experience, playing against players who compete at the top level, players who play for big clubs, but yes just disappointed that we had to return home so early. It would have been much better if we had reached the knockout stages at least.

Despite failing to make the knockout stages of the tournament following defeats to Japan and Italy and a draw with Uruguay, Margeman says that he and his teammates came away with some valuable lessons.

“The whole tournament was a learning curve for us as South Africans, you can’t afford to lose concentration for a single moment. Also, importantly, you have to take your chances when they come,” he concluded.
