Bidvest Wits closed out their Absa Premiership title-winning campaign with defeat as they sunk to a last-gasp 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Chiefs looked destined to take the lead after just seven minutes as a deep delivery to the far post found Emmanuel Letlotlo completely unmarked with the entire goal to aim for, only for the youngster to balloon his header miles over.
Amakhosi continued asking most of the pertinent questions and twice came within inches of taking the lead after 20 minutes, but Letlotlo first saw his shot clip the post, before Hendrick Ekstein drilled his effort just wide of the mark.
Wits were then dealt a big blow as Daine Klate needed to be substituted before half-time, having picked up a knock in the opening minutes of the encounter.
Wits were almost gifted the lead before the hour mark as Daniel Cardoso’s deflection left Itumeleng Khune completely stranded, although the defender was let off the hook as the ball bounced back into his path off the base of the post.
Chiefs looked to respond and worked an excellent attack through the middle of the park, although George Maluleka’s final header lacked any power and the keeper made an easy save.
Wits almost snuck the lead with around 20 minutes remaining from a corner, although Khune managed to keep out a point-blank header, despite the keeper not knowing much about it.
However, with 92 minutes gone on the clock, Chiefs snatched the points, Tsepo Masilela doing most of the hard work before setting up Gustavo Paez, who made no mistake to put the ball in the back of the net.
