Stanley Menzo lauds impact of Brandon Petersen

Ajax Cape Town coach Stanley Menzo has heaped praise on goalkeeper Brandon Peterson, refusing to take the plaudits for his key intervention this season.
Peterson, who hadn’t featured in a league match for the Urban Warriors since October, replaced regular starter Jody February in goal last month, and has kept four successive clean sheets in Ajax’s unbeaten run as they made a late surge for a top-eight berth.
When quizzed about what seemed like a tactical masterstroke, Menzo refused to take credit, hailing his young stopper for his good form.
“I made the decision to change them the moment I saw Jody wasn’t giving us the confidence that we needed as a team,” Menzo explained.
“That’s when you need to give someone else the confidence. But you have to complement Brandon: after not playing for a long time, he came in, did well and is still doing well.
"Brandon started the season, and was also changed … and that’s the thing with goalkeepers, you can’t just give them a week off to regain their confidence. Maybe if I had put Brandon on earlier, we could have been in the top four now [laughs].”
Menzo reveals that he was in a similar position himself as a goalkeeper for Ajax Amsterdam which aided his thinking in replacing February with the club’s second-choice gloveman.
“I was in the same situation when Edwin van der Sar took my place – I did not have a lot of confidence, and the players can feel that,” he said.
“And when the other player in your position has that confidence, that’s when you have to change them. And yes, with Brandon, things have gone well.”
Menzo will be hoping for a fifth consecutive clean sheet when Ajax host Baroka FC at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
