Amajita closed out their disappointing FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign with their first point of the tournament following Saturday's 0-0 draw against Uruguay.
The match proved a lively affair in the opening 20 minutes, although South Africa’s attack was limited to long-range shots, with Malebogo Modise coming closest but lashing an effort just wide.
The Uruguayans had the best chance of the first-half 10 minutes from the break as Nicolas Schiappacasse got on the end of a brilliant delivery into the area, only to send his header bouncing agonisingly wide of the upright.
South Africa looked destined to take the lead shortly after the hour mark as Mbatha was played in behind the Uruguay defence, only to send his looping shot sailing over the crossbar with the goalkeeper stranded.
Luther Singh then did well to break down the wing before skipping past his man and crossing from the byline, although Uruguay were fortunate to see the ball ping up off their goalkeeper before deflecting away from danger off Mbatha and behind for a goal-kick.
With five minutes remaining, Amajita looked for all the world like they would snatch the victory as Singh put in a telling delivery right across the face of goal to find Mbathe at the far-post, but the forward could only contrive to send his shot over the bar from just a few feet out.
The result means Amajita finish bottom of Group D, having managed just a single point from their three matches in South Korea.
