Kurt Lentjies wishes he could appoint Fadlu Davids as Maritzburg United coach for next season

Maritzburg United captain Kurt Lentjies would like to see Fadlu Davids coach the team on a permanent basis but is aware it is not his decision to make.

Davids has impressed as caretaker boss of the Team of Choice following the resignation of Roger de Sa in March and previously when Ernst Middendorp quit the club in November last year.

Davids was notably named PSL Manager of the Month for April after collecting three wins from four games and has steered the club, which narrowly beat the drop last term, to the brink of a top-eight finish with a match left.

However, the former Maritzburg skipper does not want to continue in the position next season as he has set his sights on adding the UEFA A license to his current UEFA B license.

Lentjies feels their results speak volumes for Davids' capabilities.

"When it come to coaching yes we've chopped and changed coaches like underwear these days," said Lentjies, who has netted six goals in another productive season for the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit.

"If Maritzburg was my club I'll make a decision definitely [of appointing him] but you see it's not my club, so there's people who are sitting in higher positions, and me, I'm just the captain of the team.

"We can talk as much as players that we want the coach to stay but still the decision has to come from on top. All we've to do as players, we just need to do the job on the field so whatever the club decides on what is happening with Fadlu's future the players just have to support him.

"Obviously we've responded well and the results speak volumes. But I mean, like I said, I'm not the club owner. I wish I was, and I'd have appointed [Davids]."

Maritzburg will be assured of a top-eight finish if they beat Bloemfontein Celtic at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday (15h00).
