Thabo Rakhale feels Orlando Pirates players owe it to the club to lift the Nedbank Cup

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabo Rakhale feels the players owe it to the club to deliver the Nedbank Cup on its 80th anniversary this year.

With the Buccaneers celebrating its 80th year since its inception back in 1937, there has been little to smile about as the curtain comes down on what could be the club's worst season in the PSL era.

Pirates boast the record of being the only topflight club to have maintained their top-eight status since 1996, but a horrendous 2016/17 campaign sees them at risk of missing out as they occupy 11th spot with just one league game remaining.

After advancing to the Nedbank Cup final with a nervy 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows on Sunday, Rakhale deems it necessary for the team to take the trophy home to their Houghton base to celebrate the club's milestone.

"Since the team is turning 80 this season we want to have some silverware in the cabinet," said Rakhale after the match played at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

"We are not worrying about it much, but as human beings it is similar to when it's someone's birthday, you need to buy that person a present.

"So even us we feel that we owe the club something, especially that we haven't had a great season [in the Absa Premiership]."

With their final league clash against Arrows this Saturday, before the cup final on June 24, the former Polokwane City winger promises they will try their level best to end the season on a high note.

"We are giving it our all at the moment and we still have two games to go, which is now the Nedbank final and Golden Arrows league game on Saturday," he added.

"We'll give [both games] our best shot and see where it can take us."
