SuperSport United's Thabo Mnyamane calls for successful defence of Nedbank Cup

SuperSport United forward Thabo Mnyamane has set his sights on returning to the CAF Confederation Cup next year by defending their Nedbank Cup title.

Defending champions SuperSport will take on first-time semi-finalists Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup's penultimate round on Saturday afternoon.

Kick-off at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London has been set for 15h00, with limited tickets still available through Ticketpros at a cost of R40.

Matsatsantsa are two steps away from becoming the first team to succesfully defend their crown since Kaizer Chiefs back in 1977, and winning it is their only hope of returning to the continental stage next year.

The Tshwane outfit scuffed their chance at a first Absa Premiership title in seven years, as they fell out of contention after back-to-back defeats to city rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, and are unable to finish inside the top three – the only other way of qualifying for continental football.

Having reached the group stages of this year's Confederation Cup, Mnyamane is adamant on retaining their cup, which will ensure a second successive appearance in Africa's second-tier club competition.

"We want to successfully defend our Ke Yona title,” Mnyamane said. “We want to be the first team to retain the cup, but that doesn’t mean we should put pressure on ourselves.

"We are looking to play in Africa again next season and can’t ignore that winning the cup gets us there."

Having suffered a humbling 3-0 defeat to the Chilli Boys in their league encounter in midweek, the 24-year-old goalpoacher has guaranteed a different outcome in today's clash.

"It might be the same teams but the result won’t be the same," he concluded.
