Bidvest Wits midfielder Thabang Monare emotional after making a complete turn-around from being relegated to winning his maiden top flight league title.
Monare, who a year ago had been experiencing contrasting emotions after his former club Jomo Cosmos was entangled in the relegation scrap on the final day of the season, has come full circle.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a sterling debut season with the Clever Boys, managing 22 starts of the 29 league games played thus far, and is awestruck by his fortunes after securing his and his club's maiden Absa Premiership title.
"It's been such an emotional experience... To think of it, last year, this time of the season, I was fighting relegation, and now I've won the league," Monare tells KickOff.com.
"I just don't have words to express the kind of feeling and joy that I'm feeling right now... It's just so emotional man."
The race was expected to go to the wire after Wits faltered at their bogey side Free State Stars, but thanks to Mamelodi Sundowns slip-up – registering just one win in their last five league games – Gavin Hunt's side held their nerve to get the monkey off the club's back.
Monare gave credit specifically to the experienced contingent of the team, while also paying tribute to the backroom staff and everyone else for their contributions.
"It hasn't been easy but as a team we have the players that have been there and done it [won league titles] before; players that kept us motivated and told us the situations of where they come from," says Monare.
"Daine [Klate] told us after we lost the Free State Stars game that once upon a time, at SuperSport United, they won the league even though they lost their last game, which helped us not to drop our heads.
"It [winning our first league title] means a lot. Credit to the technical team, medical staff, ladies in the kitchen that made sure we always had a decent meal after training. Everyone played a part... I just don't have words man!"
