Bidvest Wits were crowned 2016/17 Absa Premiership champions after carving out a 2-0 win over Polokwane City at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Students’ win, coupled with nearest challengers Mamelodi Sundowns’ shock 2-2 draw to Maritzburg United, means Gavin Hunt’s men have mathematically secured the title heading into the final round of league fixtures at the end of May.
The Students got off to a flying start and stormed into the lead after just four minutes following a slick passing move which ended with James Keene producing a fantastic diving header to direct the ball past George Chigova.
Wits continued to work the ball well and Elias Pelembe had a good chance after winning the ball in the area and dinking the ball over his marker, only to eventually drag his shot well wide.
Keene then came close to grabbing his second on the night, again after getting to a delivery first, only this time to send his header just wide of the mark.
Daine Klate was then unlucky not to have made it 2-0 just minutes before the half-time break after faking a shot to lose his defender in the box before eventually getting his effort away, only to see the goalkeeper get down superbly to just turn the ball away.
The Clever Boys started the second half the same way they had the first and came close to a second moments after the restart as Keen laid the ball off to Mogakolodi Ngele, who thunderbolt drive was straight at the keeper who made the save.
It wasn’t long before Hunt’s men got their second as the pressure eventually took its toll, Daine Klate - who now has six PSL league winners’ medals - providing the killer blow as he powered in behind the defence before hammering a low drive past the keeper and into the very bottom corner of the net.
And, with news having drained through to the stadium about Sundowns' scoreline against Maritzburg, the party in Braamfontein started early, and would continue long into the night.
Keene almost added some extra gloss to the scoreline after being played through and firing at goal, only to see his shot expertly turned away by the keeper.
