The return of Collins Mbesuma to the scoring charts last Friday lifted Highlands Park off the foot of the standings but also revived the the Zambian’s pursuit of breaking the all-time PSL scoring record.
With Highlands moving away from the automatic relegation spot at the bottom with that crucial win over Chippa United – Mbesuma gradually took one more step forward moving to 102 goals.
In so doing the stocky forward continues to slice off the difference towards reaching Siybabonga Nomvete’s all-time record of 119 goals.
Nomvete’s total has been frozen at that figure since he last did duty in top flight football while with Moroka Swallows during the 2014-15 season.
Bhele has since spent the past two seasons playing in the first division with AmaZulu now his current employers.
Yet for Mbesuma his return following knee surgery means not only is he at the forefront of aiding Highlands’s desperate survival mission, the goals that he scores will keep him on track towards a huge personal milestone.
‘Ntofontofo’ had last scored in October last year in the 2-0 Telkom KnockOut victory over Chippa United before injury forced him to miss a sizeable chunk of the campaign that left Highlands sinking with every week.
Though Nomvete’s total is the ultimate mark Mbesuma first needs to surpass Manuel ‘Tico-Tico’ Bucuane (104), Mabhuti Khenyeza (106) and Daniel Mudau (108) in the PSL era all-time scoring charts.
“As long as I am playing I still believe that I can break any scoring record,” Mbesuma has regularly told this publication said when asked about his scoring targets.
Tonight, Highlands have a huge relegation battle with Baroka at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium (19h30).
Mbesuma is expected to lead the attack for the visitors in a game that will hand the winner the advantage going into the last round of fixtures on May 27.
If Highlands win this match then they will go to bed knowing that whatever happens they will not be automatically relegated this season.
At present Baroka are bottom with 24 points pushed down into the mud due to the fact that they have an inferior goal difference to Chippa United, who also have the same number of points.
Highlands are a point ahead on 25.
