Bidvest Wits' Moeneeb Josephs sets goalkeeping record against Orlando Pirates

Posted: 5 May 2017 Time: 11:00

Moeneeb Josephs last night became the goalkeeper with the most starts in the history of domestic football stretching back to the founding of the NSL in 1985.

The Bidvest Wits keeper helped his side to victory over Orlando Pirates for game number 468 of an incredible career that has stretched 20 years, overtaking Brian Baloyi who retired at the end of 2010/11 having started 467 matches.

Josephs, who turns 37 this month, already holds the PSL era record for most starts of all players which he achieved in March 2015, surpassing Baloyi’s long-standing mark which stood at 409.

Though he had been deputising for Darren Keet for most of this season, Josephs has been thrown back between the posts in the last four games, keeping a clean sheet in three of those matches.

With Wits pushing their way towards their first ever league title the experience brought in by ‘Slim Kat’ is precious.

“That is why you get old. To deal with these things,” said Josephs this week when asked about being thrown into the deep end in a championship-challenging team.

“The coach has shown faith, 'Popeye' [Keet] has done a wonderful job and he put us in this position that we are in right now. The coach made a decision and I got to play now and it is great that I can get to play and help the team now. It is just great that I can still help the team but it means nothing if you haven’t won anything at the end of the day. So we will speak about that again at the end of the season when everything is done and dusted,” he said.

Since making his debut as a teenager in the colours of Cape Town Spurs back on September 7, 1997 Josephs has won all trophies offered on the domestic scene and been capped at Under-17, U-20 and with the senior national team.

While he has now reached a goalkeeping milestone in domestic football Josephs remains some distance away from reaching the all-time record of most starts in domestic football of 592 held by Edries Burton.

Burton retired in 2007 having played domestic football through both the NSL and PSL eras starting out with Santos in 1991, the same club where he eventually called time after also playing for Cape Town Spurs and AmaZulu.

Andre Arendse is another goalkeeper who retired with over 400 starts in domestic football, closing off at 430.
