Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says if only luck was on their side this season they could have been in a better position to win the 2016/17 Absa Premiership.

Amakhosi dropped crucial points against Cape Town City and SuperSport United in their last two league games, but Komphela feel they are currently playing some good football with four games to go.

“I don’t want to be arrogant… I strongly believe currently Chiefs are playing a brand of football that is just easy to watch. You will want to watch them – the energy is there and if you go back and look at all the goals we scored, they are unbelievable, phenomenal, we generate them. Not saying the other opponents don’t generate their goals,” Komphela said.

“And based on that you get this hope that the only thing… the only thing that we say is… my goodness me, could the gods be with us and win these matches for the supporters.

“You look at Baroka on how we conceded the goal from [Mxolisi] Kunene and a deflection; and we saying how could it be? You look at SuperSport in the Nedbank [Cup] we missed a penalty in extra time. You look at Orlando Pirates we missed a penalty five minutes to go.

“You look at SuperSport now when drew them, we missed so many chances, so many one-on-ones – who do you fault? Can’t fault the players for trying and making that effort.

“Maybe one thing you would say is‚ ‘Could we maybe need that luck?’ Because sometimes to win championships you need a lot of luck.”

Komphela also said only after tonight’s games will it be known who the favourites are to win the league this season.

“Let’s wait for the closure of the two matches [Mamelodi Sundowns vs Platinum Stars and Bidvest Wits vs Orlando Pirates] and let’s see what happens this week. There are matches this week and as soon as everybody is on the same tally [number of games] then you can start looking at it [who is going to win the league]; but it is still open, make no mistake,” he added.
