Thanda Royal Zulu have been promoted to the Absa Premiership after today’s victory over Stellenbosch FC mathematically secured them the National First Division title.
Roger Sikhakhane’s men earned a 2-1 win at home on Wednesday to take them 12 points clear of second-placed Black Leopards, and with only three games remaining this season, Thanda’s promotion to the top-flight is confirmed.
The PSL confirmed their promotion via Twitter, posting:
Congratulations to the 2016/17 NFD Champions, Thanda Royal Zulu #NFDChamps— Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) May 3, 2017
The race for the play-off spots, however, is still in full swing after Leopards played to a goalless draw at fourth-placed Royal Eagles, while Stellenbosch sit sandwiched between the pair in third.
The playoff door is also open for AmaZulu and Witbank Spurs to make a push for a top-three finish, with those sides sitting joint-fourth with Eagles, while Mbombela United’s win over FC Cape Town left them a just one point further back.
Meanwhile, Santos look doomed to the third tier after their draw against Jomo Cosmos left the People’s Team nine points and plenty of goals away from safety with their three games left.
Wednesday’s NFD results:
Real Kings FC 1-1 Witbank Spurs
Mthatha Bucks 0-0 AmaTuks
Magesi 1-0 All Stars
Mbombela 3-1 FC Cape Town
Royal Eagles 0-0 Black Leopards
Santos 1-1 Cosmos
Thanda Royal Zulu 2-1 Stellenbosch
