Grant Margeman focused at Ajax Cape Town ahead of U-20 World Cup

Ajax Cape Town teenager Grant Margeman says playing against men nearly twice his age is making him tougher and instilling a fearless approach to his game.

The 18-year-old midfielder has impressed in the Absa Premiership in 2016/17, reiterating his value with his third goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Platinum Stars in the Mother City on Monday.

Margeman is grateful for the game-time he is receiving from coach Stanley Menzo ahead of his participation at the U-20 World Cup, taking place in South Korea from May 20 to June 11.

“It’s important to place the needs of the team first, you know,” Margeman tells KickOff.com. “Personal glory is nice, but it feels hollow when celebrated whereas collective success you can feel and share with your teammates.

“Therefore I need to thank the coach for the opportunities he’s given me as well as his confidence and faith in me. All I can do to repay him is to score goals and to deliver good performances.

“The coach is aware that the U-20s are playing in the World Cup soon. I’m sure that is why he’s giving me the game-time in the senior team. I’m very grateful for that.

“The fact that I’m playing with men almost twice my age and size will make me a better footballer. It will make me tougher and mentally stronger, you know. It gives me the confidence to go out and fear no one.”

Margeman is expected to feature for Ajax against Chippa United in Port Elizabeth this Saturday before linking up with Amajita on their return from a training camp in Europe.

“I’m really excited to play in the World Cup,” Margeman adds. “It’s an amazing feeling you know. You cannot describe it. We have a good squad and I know we gave give a good account of ourselves.”
