Absa Premiership match report Chippa United vs Maritzburg United

Posted: 25 April 2017 Time: 18:48

Maritzburg United managed to hold on for victory as they saw off a resilient Chippa United 3-2 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

The Team of Choice came within a whisker of taking a fourth-minute lead as Bandile Shandu delivered a pin-point delivery to pick out Mondli Dlamini, but he could only turn the ball just wide of the mark.

It wouldn’t take long for United to get their goal, though, with Mohau Mokate heading home from Kurt Lentjies’ corner as the visitors applied the early pressure.

The same combination of players almost produced the same outcome a few minutes later as Lentjies laid the ball into the path of Mokate, but this time he was lacking composure as he eventually lost possession of the ball.

The Team of Choice continued asking most of the questions and were eventually rewarded with a second goal on 65 minutes as substitute Andrea Fileccia was brought down inside the area, with Lentjies stepping up to slot home from the spot.

Chippa thought they had pulled one back a few minutes later as Lerato Manzini managed to wrestle the ball across the line, but after some deliberation, the referee adjudged the forward to have fouled Virgil Vries while making the challenge.

The hosts did finally get their goal as Phetolo Sekome got on the scoresheet with 14 minutes remaining, although Maritzburg quickly restored their two-goal cushion as Fileccia turned from creator to scorer for the visitors.

Chippa weren’t out of it yet, though, and again brought themselves to within one goal as Zaphaniah Mbokoma found the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining, although they weren’t able to make a strong enough push in the closing minutes as they eventually succumbed to defeat.
