Kwanda Mngonyama lauds Maritzburg United fans for inspiring winning home form

Maritzburg United defender Kwanda Mngonyama says their fans deserve plenty of credit this season as the club nears a top-eight finish in the Absa Premiership.

The Team of Choice have enjoyed a massive turnaround in fortunes this term, going from relegation near-misses in 2015/16 to top-half challengers in the current campaign.

Three home wins on the trot has also helped United’s cause, hoisting them to seventh in the standings, and Mngonyama believes it is their supporters who have helped inspire them to their current level of success.

“Playing at home motivates us a lot as players because of the support and love the fans give us. We are excited with the home results of late because we were able to give back to our fans,” he said via a post on Maritzburg’s Facebook page.

Asked if they can continue their stellar form when they take on Chippa United next Tuesday, he said: “I am confident that we can stretch it [winning run] further.

“I trust my team-mates on that one. We have young players who are hungry to do well, guided by senior players who are equally committed. We work as a unit and fight for each other.”

Mngonyama scored the first goal during the 3-1 win over Baroka FC at the weekend, which earned him praise from his coach Fadlu Davids and captain Kurt Lentjies, which he admits has inspired him to do more in future.

“I was obviously very happy with the goal. We have a responsibility to defend and to attack as a team. With every game I give my all, I love football and whenever I play, it’s not about me, it’s about the team,” he said.

“Coach Fadlu [Davids] understands us very well and we understand him too, as players, as brothers and as sons. He manages us very well, keeps us awake and has instilled an understanding that we are here to work, and work hard.”
