The  January signing played his full game for the Soweto giants against the Chilli Boys in the absence of suspended striker Bernard Parker.

Chiefs won their third league match in a row courtesy of an 85th-minute strike from substitute George Lebese at FNB Stadium.

Komphela told his club's website: "Paez gave us everything we were looking for. I thought that he would get tired, but he played well until the end of the match.”

He added: "We will sort out the return of Parker when we get there next week.”

Meanwhile, Komphela was certain Lebese, who made his return from an ankle injury, would make an impact on the night after bringing on the left-footed midfielder for Edmore Chirambadare at the start of the second half.

"We made a few changes, including bringing on George Lebese and it worked. With Edmore having worked hard in the first half, we thought that Lebese with his finesse will give us something different. And, I remember telling the bench that George will score for us tonight and that’s exactly what happened."

The victory leaves Amakhosi level with log leaders Cape Town City on 45 points, but having played an extra match. Komphela was naturally grateful for the three points with just six league matches left for his charges.

"Any point counts at the stage. We played a good side that can hurt you if you aren’t careful. They don’t threaten often, but they have this ability to score at any point of the game if you aren’t careful. We had to grind out a result and I’m happy with the three points."

Chiefs next face SuperSport United at the same venue in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals on April 29.
