Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba hailed the importance of Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United as the Soweto giants climbed back into the top-half of the Absa Premiership table.
Gcaba got the Buccaneers up and running at Orlando Stadium with a well-taken header, before Maritzburg imploded with two sending offs during the course of the game, which was put to bed by Dove Wome late on in the second-half.
And, speaking to SuperSport TV after picking up the man-of-the-match award, Gcaba was thrilled to have made his mark on the game and have helped Pirates break their run of 12 league matches without victory.
“It was great,” said a proud Gcaba. “For me, it’s been a while since I’ve scored, and coming into this game we had to [overcome] our setbacks and we knew we had to win against Maritzburg tonight.
“It’s never easy, because Maritzburg are a side that is good, they always press, play short passes. But defensively we tried to keep solid and keep a clean sheet.”
The defender took a nasty knock to his ankle and needed to be stretchered off, although he played down any severity over the injury.
“My ankle is sore but I’ll soldier on,” he concluded.
