Baroka FC moved themselves off the bottom of the Absa Premiership standings with a 2-1 win over Free State Stars at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.
Moeketsi Sekola looked to signal Stars’ intent in the opening 60 seconds but failed to find the target with an early shot, before Victor Letsoalo responded in kind with a wayward effort of his own a few minutes later.
Baroka again tried to work something through Siphelele Zikalala but the players seemed to have left their shooting boots at home as he too turned one wide of the mark.
Poor shooting seemed to be the name of the game on the evening as Nhlanhla Vilakazi became the latest guilty party to fail to test the goalkeeper after the opening 30 minutes in Polokwane.
Baroka were finally able to manage a shot on target with 37 minutes gone, although Thela Ngobeni was equal to the challenge to keep out Mxolisi Kunene’s effort, but with five minutes left in the half they got the breakthrough, Maboke Matlakala firing home a left-footed shot past the keeper.
Stars twice came close to drawing themselves level in the early stages of the second-half with shots from Thamsanqa Teyise and Sinethemba Jantjie, but Oscarine Masuluke was on hand to deal with the danger on both occasions, the second of which needed a fingertip save from the keeper.
However, just before the hour mark Stars got themselves back on level terms, Goodman Dlamini producing the goods for the visitors with a right-footed finish past Masuluke.
Baroka were soon back in front, though, as Matlakala grabbed his brace with 66 minutes gone, heading home from Richard Matloga’s corner.
Dlamini tried to replicate his opponent’s double with a decent effort in the final four minutes, but he was unable to keep his shot down as the ball flew wide of the mark.
