The growing injury list at Mamelodi Sundowns has prompted coach Pitso Mosimane to warn that his club will find it difficult to play through into next season without adequate rest and preparation.

“I don’t know if we can go through another season without proper preparation,” he warned as the club readied itself to face SuperSport United in Thursday’s derby in the Absa Premiership.

Sundowns did not have a proper pre-season at the start of the current domestic campaign because of their participation in the group phase of the African Champions League, and are now counting the cost with several key players suffering injury that pundits say is because they did not have an opportunity to lay down a basis of fitness.

Among those out through injury are Wayne Arendse, Tiyani Mabunda and Sibusiso Vilakazi, all unlikely to play again before June.

But the club face the same scenario in June and July when they again compete in the group phase of the Champions League. While other clubs will be resting, Sundowns will be playing across Africa in a bid to retain their title as the continent’s best club.

“We can’t play football continuously for two years and have only three weeks' break. It is not going to work,” he added.
