Steve Komphela critical of lacklustre Kaizer Chiefs in Nedbank Cup win over Acornbush United

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela was critical of his side's mentality as they needed to dig deep to see off 10-man Acornbush United in the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

Amakhosi looked to be heading out of the Ke Yona competition at the Last 16 stage after Acornbush held the lead with 12 minutes to go, despite having played 52 minutes with only 10 men after Bongani Nyathi’s 26th-minute sending off.

However, substitute Gustavo Paez came to the rescue for Amakhosi, firing home a brace in the space of six minutes to rescue the game and put the Soweto giants into the quarter-finals.

And, speaking after the game, Komphela told SuperSport: “We made our lives difficult. There was good action, exciting [football], but I thought we lacked the patience and maturity to deal with matches of this calibre.

“In matches like this, you cannot want to run with the ball because the excitement of the [opponents]. You’re making your life difficult. How could [we] have simplified this? Pass, and move.

“Simplicity would have been the best [approach] here.”

Komphela continued: “Paez, [I’m] happy for him, but we have to think from the benches, we have to manipulate the match [with effective substitutions] because you can see they [the players] are giving their best on the field, but the result is just not coming and time is running out, and now you have to start thinking, as a coach, ‘compromise a few players, make unpopular decisions'.

"But you’re trying to get a victory and I compliment the players for understanding what we’re going through.

“Now we go back [to training] and try not to repeat the mistakes.”
