Orlando Pirates coach Kjell Jonevret says two of his best players stepped up in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup.
The Swedish coach was buoyed by the efforts of captain Oupa Manyisa and man of the match Mpho Makola, with the latter returning from injury after missing the league defeat to his former club in the previous match.
Makola opened the scoring with a crisp strike while Manyisa, who hasn't been at his typical standard this season following a long-term injury, scored the third by clipping it over onrushing goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi after he stole the ball off the feet of Bogang Thlone in the centre circle.
Jonevret believes if Makola and Manyisa can step up like this more consistently, the team will win more matches.
“Oupa, when I arrived here at the club, a lot of people told me Oupa has been so weak for some time and I think he has been our best player for long now,” said Jonevret.
“He was the same again and I think he was very good out there and he was the same again. But of course [they are] our key players, I mean both goals for example were fantastic goals.
“Last week he [Makola] wasn’t able to be here because of the injury and players like that they have to step forward. They have to be the first in line because if we play like this we can win many matches.”
Manyisa, meanwhile, said that he has been working hard in training so that he can score more often and said the team is starting to gel with the coach.
“It’s about time we scored the goals so we know that we have to keep on scoring the goals,” he told SuperSport TV. “It’s something that we’ve been practising at training … I must keep on working very hard and running off the ball.
“We are getting to understand him [the coach] also because we always sit down with him and he tells us what to do and what not to do.”
Pirates join SuperSport United, Jomo Cosmos and Chippa United in the quarter-final draw. The remaining fixtures conclude today as Kaizer Chiefs visit Acornbush United, while Bloemfontein Celtic take on Mbombela United.
