Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia says only Orlando Pirates tabled a bid for Evans Rusike

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia has revealed Orlando Pirates were the only team to table an actual offer for Evans Rusike during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old, who is in his second season with the KwaZulu-Natal-based club, was the go-to man for Maritzburg last season after scoring nine goals in all competitions, including two in the last game of the season under former coach Ernst Middendorp.

During the off-season, United were believed to have fielded plenty of offers for the Zimbabwe striker following his impressive campaign, with Kaizer Chiefs said to have been leading the race for his signature.

United have even since exercised the two-year option on Rusike's current contract, which was initially set to expire in June this year, in a bid to ward off any further interest from suitors.

However, Kadodia says only Pirates came in with an offer in January, which he turned away as he looks to keep the fans coming through the turnstiles on matchdays.

"Pirates is the only team that came to me to put pressure on me for Rusike," reveals Kadodia.

"I said no because you must understand that if I sold any of the key players here, for the fans that stood behind the club to survive last year it would've been an insult to them.

"So I explained to Orlando Pirates: 'what would you do if you were in my position?'"

Meanwhile, Kadodia is currently mulling over an offer from Mamelodi Sundowns for Deolin Mekoa.
