Bhongolethu Jayiya’s hat-trick for Cape Town City last night marked only the second treble of the Absa Premiership season, after Tendai Ndoro’s three-peat on the opening week of 2016/17.
Jayiya and City made light work of Chippa United this week, with the forward bagging all three of his goals in the space of 10 minutes as the Citizens returned to the top of the league table with a 4-1 win.
And while that may have been the fastest treble scored in the PSL era - with all three goals coming in the space of 10 minutes - it means there has been an eight-month gap between hat-tricks in the PSL, across all competitions, with Orlando Pirates striker Ndoro’s treble having come against Golden Arrows at the end of August last year.
That marks a stark dip in numbers from last year, where no fewer than eight hat-tricks were spread out across the campaign, including one by Jayiya when Cape Town City were still playing under the banner of Mpumalanga Black Aces, coming against United Rovers in the Nedbank Cup.
Jayiya’s goals last night took the overall tally of hat-tricks in the PSL era to 147, with a full list published in the latest edition of KICK OFF magazine. Tell us in the comments below which have been your most memorable trebles of the past 20 years.
