Richard Matloga rallies Baroka as he puts personal glory aside

Posted: 28 March 2017 Time: 14:41

Baroka attacking midfielder Richard Matloga insists he will only stand satisfied if his efforts eventually help his club survive the looming drop.

Matloga has been a standout performer for the PSL debutants, featuring in all of Bakgaga's games thus far, proving just why the club had to go through so much trouble to acquire his services at the start of the season.

From 24 games in all competitions this term, Matloga has started 23 and come off the bench in one.

“I think I have done well for a player in only his first season in the PSL but what matters most is getting the team out of this position that we are in. Personal glory is secondary for me in this situation because the team must survive,” Matloga tells KickOff.com.

With nine games remaining Baroka are still at the bottom of the standings, four points behind the play-off spot occupied by Free State Stars, and the safety position of 14th that has Bloemfontein Celtic written next to it.

“We are focused on the job at hand as a team, which is in trying to get out this position. We believe we can honestly do it, which is why we have been putting all this work all along," he adds.

"For us we are aware that we dropped points in games that we should have won and so the next challenge for us is to make sure that we rectify that. At first our problem was scoring goals, but we are now scoring and also conceding.

“We genuinely feel that we can make this happen [escape relegation] and the kind of confidence that we need for this job will come from winning games.

"The PSL has opened up in terms of learning fast about the fact that teams just don’t lose possession easily here, and you must always be disciplined in your approach to avoid being punished,” he concludes.
