Kaizer Chiefs’ Wiseman Meyiwa relishing upcoming World Cup

Posted: 26 March 2017 Time: 16:12

Kaizer Chiefs youth product Wiseman Meyiwa says he’s looking forward to the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup, but knows it won’t be an easy assignment.

Meyiwa formed an important part of Thabo Senong’s side that finished fourth at the recent U-20 Afcon in Zambia, which secured a World Cup finals berth for the upcoming tournament in South Korea.

Meyiwa, who turns out for the Chiefs MultiChoice Diski Challenge team, says he is eagerly anticipating the tournament, and feels well-prepared owing to past experiences.

“I have gathered enough experience to be ready for South Korea,” he tells the Chiefs website. “I am delighted to be part of the national team set-up. Being at Kaizer Chiefs’ development is also a plus to be recognised at the national team level.

“I have been with Amajimbos to the Under-17 World Cup in Chile, back in 2015. I hope to use that experience in Korea in May.”

The 17-year-old, who featured in every game in Zambia, knows all about facing tough opposition.

“I remember during the Cosafa Under-20 championship that we played against big boys, who pushed us and who played at high tempo,” he says.

“Accordingly, as Amajita, we played well at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia. I was privileged to feature in all our games. I will continue to work hard to be ready for Korea.”

South Africa have been drawn in Group D with Japan, Uruguay and Italy for the global showpiece, yet Meyiwa is not afraid of taking on the world’s best.

“I hear that a lot of people are worried about our group opponents,” he says. “We know that it is not going to be easy, but we are up to the task. I am back at the club, working hard at training and playing in friendlies, because the MDC is on recess at the moment.”

The 2017 Under-20 World Cup takes place in South Korea from 20 May to 11 June.
