Percy Tau has more international caps than he thinks he does!

Someone needs to tell Percy Tau that he has more international caps than he thinks he does!

Tau scored for South Africa in their 3-1 victory against Guinea-Bissau on Saturday in what has incorrectly been reported as his debut for the national side.

Even the player believes that it was his maiden cap, perhaps because his last two came in the low-key African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Angola that were played in October 2015.

“I’m very happy with my debut, especially because the team won the match at the end of the day,” Tau was quoted by the Mamelodi Sundowns website.

There is a debate over whether the qualifiers for CHAN should count as international caps as the squads selected are home-based players only.

But FIFA has listed the games as full ‘A’ internationals (see below) and have themselves awarded caps for these. As the governing body of the sport globally, they should be the final arbiter, even if there is a case to be made for them being wrong.

So Tau can now claim to have three caps and can add a fourth when Bafana tackle Angola in East London on Tuesday.

“The opponents were strong, especially in the second half and I feel me and my teammates did enough to deserve a win. We will build on from this performance and hopefully get better,” Tau said of the Guinea-Bissau game.

“The squad is fairly new and we are learning a lot about ourselves as a group at the moment. If we continue taking the lessons and responding as positive as we did, we could go on to be a formidable team.”
