Chippa United captain Thamsanqa Sangweni is delighted to have coach Dan Malesela back to full health as his side sets their sights on Nedbank Cup success.
Malesela was back on the bench for his side’s last encounter, a 1-0 Nedbank Cup victory over Witbank Spurs, after being hospitalised due to persistent back pain, from which he has now fully recovered, much to the delight of his skipper.
“He is huge for us and his presence meant a lot to everyone in the club,” Sangweni is quoted as saying on his club’s website. “He is back. He is 100% and we are all happy to have him back with the team.”
The Last 32 Nedbank Cup win saw the Chilli Boys advance to the Last 16, where they have been pitted against fellow Absa Premiership side Polokwane City, with Sangweni hoping the club’s home ground advantage will work in their favour.
“Polokwane City plays a similar brand of football to us,” he said of the draw. “We have already met this season and the two Clubs know each other well. We are home for this one though, and that in itself is an extra motivation.”
The midfielder also touched on the number of players that moved away from Port Elizabeth in the recent transfer window, including the likes of James Okwuosa, Marc Van Heerden, Thembinkosi Lorch and Nkosinathi Mthiyane, insisting that the club still have enough quality to fight for a trophy this season.
“It happens in football that players move on with their careers,” he said. “We have moved on as a football club and we are focusing on achieving something with the club as the current generation. The Nedbank Cup gives us an opportunity to challenge for something and we will give our all.”
Ninth on the log, Chippa next face log-leaders Cape Town City in a league encounter on 1 April.
