Zidane downplays Real Madrid lead in La Liga following win at Athletic Bilbao

Posted: 19 March 2017 Time: 10:52

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has played down their five-point lead at the summit of the Spanish Primera Division, claiming it means nothing.

Following the hard-fought 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium on Saturday, Los Blancos pulled five points ahead of second-placed Barcelona.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for the visitors before Aritz Aduriz equalised for Ernesto Valverde's side just after the hour-mark.

Nonetheless, the most unlikely of scorers popped up, with defensive midfielder Casemiro finding a winner only two minutes later.

"We won on a difficult pitch," Zidane said after the game. "We suffered a huge amount but we played with personality at the same time.

"We know Athletic will not give up until the end and they cause us some problems. They got a goal in the second half when they were playing well.

"It was important to win - we're still on a good run. There are 11 games left, we're top, but that means nothing. We know there are still difficult games left."
