SuperSport United defender Mario Booysen says if all else fails they need to at least defend their Nedbank Cup title this season.
Matsatsantsa begin their title defence away to First Division side Royal Eagles in their tournament opener at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Having just recently returned from Sudan, where they narrowly lost 3-2 in their CAF Confederation Cup first round first leg against Al-Ahly Shendi, Booysens has now urged his teammates to focus on advancing in the domestic cup.
"I think with the bunch of quality players that we have, to be honest, we're actually stronger this season," states the lanky centre-back, who faces tough competition from the likes of Morgan Gould, Clayton Daniels, Tefu Mashamaite and young Denwin Farmer.
"I think we have to defend our title. Obviously there are many other things to play for but to defend our cup is the main aim, and that starts against Royal Eagles."
The 28-year-old, who is on loan at United from Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, admits respect for the Absa Premiership promotion contenders, but calls on his teammates to put in a shift worthy of their reigning champions tag.
"We have to respect them but we have to go out there and play like we are the former champions," he concludes.
