Orlando Pirates handed new coach Kjell Jonevret his first win in charge as they carved out a 3-1 victory over Eastern Cape Bees FC in the Nedbank Cup last-32 on Sunday.
It didn’t take long for the Buccaneers to open the scoring at Sisa Dukashe Stadium, with Mpho Makola doing all the hard work to eventually deliver the ball on a platter for Dove Wome, who duly tapped home from close-range.
The Sea Robbers came close to a second goal two minutes later but Bernard Morrison, after being played in one-on-one by Wome, saw his shot come back off the crossbar.
Makola continued looking lively for Pirates and twice set up Thamsanqa Gabuza with crosses into the box, but on both occasions, the forward was unable to convert the chances into goals.
The playmaker finally got his goal seven minutes after the restart, producing a sublime free-kick from way out which curled past the keeper and into the back of the net.
Complacency seemed to creep in after going 2-0 up, though, and Bees took full advantage to pull one back, Bongani Chikile getting the biggest goal of his footballing career against one of the country’s, and indeed Africa’s, most high-profile clubs.
The forward was then denied what would have been Bees’ equaliser a few minutes later as Siyabonga Mpontshane did superbly to just tip his free-kick around the upright.
However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed as Pirates restored their two-goal cushion with 66 minutes gone, Gabuza turning home from Wome’s low delivery.
