Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt not reading too much into 0-0 draw vs Chippa United

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says it doesn’t matter if you win the Absa Premiership by a mile or on goal difference, as long as his team are top of the pile come the end of the season.

The Students claimed top spot in the standings on Tuesday, despite playing out a goalless draw against Chippa United at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium, with the side going above Cape Town City on goal difference.

Speaking after the match, which was played under the challenging conditions at the Mdantsane-based venue, Hunt told KickOff.com: “We played well against Chippa. We played very well in a very difficult situation on a very difficult pitch, in a hostile environment, so we played well.

“We had good chances but we just couldn’t score, but it’s not the end of the world.”

When it was suggested Wits had lost the chance to take a stronger hold of the Premiership lead, Hunt replied: “We’re top of the league. If it stays the same we stay top of the league and we win by goal difference, what difference does it make?

“But it’s still 11 games left for us so we’re not [getting ahead of ourselves].”

Wits take a break from the slogs of Premiership action this weekend, although there will be no relaxing as the Students have CAF Champions League commitments to fulfill with a trip to Egypt to face Al Ahly in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, the South African Football Association have announced the Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming friendly internationals, with Wits star Phakamani Mhlambi getting his call-up to the national first team.
