Stuart Baxter pleased with SuperSport United performance vs Orlando Pirates, irked by refereeing

Stuart Baxter was pleased to see SuperSport United stick to the game plan against Orlando Pirates but was annoyed by what he felt was questionable decision making by the referees.

Matsatsantsa were denied top spot in the Absa Premiership standings as Thabo Mnyamane’s opener was canceled out by Thembinkosi Lorch’s 75th-minute equaliser at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

However, SuperSport saw a Jeremy Brockie goal controversially ruled out for off-side, while the New Zealand international also looked to have won his side a penalty after being brought down by Ayanda Gcaba, only for the referee to wave away the appeals.

And, speaking after the game, a slightly bitter Baxter told SuperSportTV: “We talk very much about what we do, not about what the opponents are going to do to us, and let them try to deal with us.

“Yes, we tweak our shape a little bit to deal with the opponents but we try to play our game. And you come to Orlando Stadium and you play your game and you score the goals and you create chances.

“I know that Pirates have a lot of balls in the box, and I know there’s a lot of hearts in mouths, but I think, in general, the lads defended their box very, very bravely. And from that I think we had some good situations, it’s just a shame that two 100 percent [certain chances] were taken away from us, and that’s annoying."

Echoing his coach’s disappointment was SuperSport goalscorer Mnyamane, who said: “It’s a bitter pill to swallow. I’m not very pleased with the result, we should have done more but we’ll take the point and go.”
