Reneilwe Letsholonyane downplays veteran status and SuperSport United's log position

Posted: 3 March 2017 Time: 16:17

SuperSport United midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has downplayed their current log standing, considering they still have a dozen league games to play this season.

Matsatsantsa have the advantage of top spot at the moment but a concoction of factors means they will not be guaranteed to remain there should Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns win their catch-up games.

Also worth noting is the fact that SuperSport must still play Sundowns twice in their home and away league ties this season.

“For us being on top of the league at this moment is a bit cosmetic because we still have games to play and there are teams with games in hand,” reasons Letsholonyane.

“Being where we are right now, I don’t think it really says much for us. Obviously we are running the race and we want to win as many games as possible and whoever has games in hand, how they play it’s their journey.

"At the moment we are happy with the position but then like I have already said our position is still cosmetic because the league is not yet over.”

Looking pumped up yet again this season the veteran midfielder says he is merely aiming to continue defying those who judge players based on age.

“I think I have heard the same statement every season when the league starts," he adds. "Two seasons back when I scored a few goals at the beginning of the season the same statement came up that I look pumped up.

"For me I am doing what I love by playing football. It is my passion so I try hard to do well with every given opportunity and it is one of those seasons where I am working hard as a player, trying to defy the odds of being called an oldie. I am enjoying what I am doing; I am enjoying myself playing football; I am enjoying my life.

“I don’t care much about me scoring goals. For me it is more about contributing towards the team winning and as things are looking now we are doing well as a team and I am doing well personally and I am happy with all of that."

SuperSport are in action against Ajax Cape Town at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night, with kick-off set for 20h15.
