Kjell Jonevret talks up Kaizer Chiefs favourites tag for Soweto Derby

Posted: 1 March 2017 Time: 16:43

Orlando Pirates coach Kjell Jonevret has tipped Kaizer Chiefs as "favourites" while his team are "underdogs" in this weekend's Soweto Derby.

While the hype surrounding this particular fixture has yet to take off, the new man at the Pirates helm has taken to mind games just three days before the biggest domestic fixture on the South African calendar.

With the Buccaneers having to endure a difficult 2016/17 campaign, having played under three different coaches, thus far, the Swedish tactician says Amakhosi's form suggests they can win the match at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

“Kaizer Chiefs have been really good this season and are probably favourites going into this one, whilst Pirates find themselves in unfamiliar territory of being under dogs," Jonevret told his club's official website.

However, the former Vikings and Djurgardens mentor is mindful of how form and log positions play no part in deciding the outcome of a fierce on-field rivalry, while insisting that the pressure is on Steve Komphela's troops.

"But the Derby is a special game, anything can happen, it has nothing to do with form or log standings," he added.

"The Derby has its own life, and I can only marvel over the possibilities, but for me there is no pressure over the result because so far this season Chiefs has been the better team, and I think the pressure is all on them to deliver."

With the Derby usually attracting a crowd of 60 000-upward, Jonevret adds that the supporters' presence at this point of the team's struggles is the key to a swift turn-around, and begs for the Ghosts' full support come Saturday at 15h30.

“I felt there was not too many supporters on Saturday but the ones that were there were fantastic. I just want to tell them that they have an important role to play.

"It’s going to be important for the club, players and supporters that we do this together now. The 12th man can sometimes be the most important player on the team and we really need them now,” he concluded.
