Fileccia returns after misdiagnosis

Belgian striker Andrea Fileccia is finally back in training with Maritzburg United after falling prey to a botched doctor’s diagnosis.
Fileccia was injured during the warm-up for a match against SuperSport United on September 21 last year and upon being seen by a doctor based in Pietermaritzburg, he was told that it was a mere inflammation … only to later find out it was actually a tear.
“The first doctor took a scan and told me that it is a mere inflammation, so I then went back to work with the club physiotherapist and fitness trainer,” he tells KickOff.com.
“However, what was surprising was that after a couple of days I still felt way too much discomfort which gave a signal that this cannot be just an inflammation. The coach at the time Ernst Middendorp then suggested I go and see another doctor in Sandton who picked up that I had a tear on my Achilles tendon, which was correct. I then took the proper treatment and did my rehabilitation and finally I am back now.
“It is unfortunate that a small problem then became big and though the experience was tough for me I had to be strong mentally. It is now in the past and I am focusing on the future because I want to help the team,” explains Fileccia.
The 25-year-old featured in the club’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge draw with Free State Stars over the weekend and will be available for first team selection this weekend when the Team of Choice faces off against Golden Arrows.
“Fitness-wise I am good and hoping to be back doing the job for the team again,” says Fileccia, who has only played two games for the club since joining from Free State Stars at the beginning of the season.
