Platinum Stars' Cavin Johnson chuffed for Gerald Phiri after brace against Bloemfontein Celtic

Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson praised new signing Gerald Phiri after the Malawian drilled home two free-kicks in the 3-0 win at Bloemfontein Celtic.

Phiri, a January arrival from Bidvest Wits, bagged a quick-fire brace before Bongi Ntuli added a third goal late in the contest, which was marred by unruly fan behaviour at Dr Molemela Stadium.

"Phiri has been working hard at training, practising free-kicks," Johnson told the club's website.

"In other matches, he has been floating them and I told him, just put the ball in the net. He hit the free-kicks and they both went in. Well done to him."

The result snapped a five-game winless run in the league for Dikwena, and Johnson felt the victory was a long time coming as his side rose from 14th to 12th on the table with 19 points from 18 games.

"Since the beginning of the year, we have been playing well but things didn’t go our way," he said.

"This is what Platinum Stars is made of. They know where they have been. They know when they were second. They know when they were third and they know when they were 14. They know how to fight. Today the ball was on our side and we scored the goals."

The ex-SuperSport United boss added: "We scored two early goals, took the foot off the pedal and allowed them to come at us but we defended well. We are happy that we got the three points. We have been waiting for a win for a long time."
