Title contenders Cape Town City thumped hapless Baroka 3-0 in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.
Former Orlando Pirates striker Lehlohonolo Majoro struck either side of the break before Sibusiso Masina added a third goal in the 52nd minute at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The result saw the Citizens rise from fifth to second on the table with 35 points from 19 matches - just behind SuperSport United on goal difference.
Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs and champions Mamelodi Sundowns are also in the hunt for league honours, with the latter boasting games in hand on their rivals.
Bakgaga, who are winless in 14 games in all competitions, are propping up the standings with 13 points from 19 fixtures.
In a lively contest, Majoro opened the scoring with a composed finish in the box 12 minutes in.
City talisman Lebogang Manyama threatened midway through the first stanza, as his deflected free-kick drew a sharp save from goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke.
Masuluke was kept on his toes, notably foiling Aubrey Ngoma with a reaction stop just before the break.
Earlier, Nyasha Munetsi directed a header wide for the hosts from close range, while teammates Mxolisi Kunene and Richard Matloga also flashed efforts off-target.
Majoro, however, completed his brace with a header in the 50th minute for his fifth goal of the season, shortly before Masina scored in similar fashion.
