Free State Stars’ Christoffer Mafoumbi relieved after returning from injury

Posted: 25 February 2017 Time: 10:20

Free State Stars goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi says he has heaved a huge sigh of relief after finally getting to play for the club after injury forced him out for the first six months of his time at Ea Lla Koto.

Mafoumbi joined from Bulgarian club FK Verega Stara Zagora during the winter break, but then picked up an Achilles tendon injury during pre-season a few weeks later.

He has since worked his way back, and made his debut in the goalless draw with SuperSport United last week Wednesday and was again between the posts in the 1-0 away win at Golden Arrows this past weekend.

The absence of Thela Ngobeni – who had kept goals during the first half of the season – has not been felt at all.

“It is a huge sigh of relief to finally play,” Mafoumbi tells KickOff.com.

“Getting injured just after signing for a new team is the worst thing that can happen to any footballer. Worse for me was the fact that this was the first injury of my career. I had to stand strong and show courage in recovering from the injury and I am glad that in the two games that I have played I haven’t conceded, which is a huge motivation for me as a goalkeeper. Right now I will take it one game at a time because I am also learning while building my confidence.

“Now is the time to repay the club for the faith they showed when they signed me and I am glad it has been a good start for me. However, what I want to see happening is the team winning more games so that we move up the standings,” says Mafoumbi who was born in France, but is of Congo-Brazzaville descent.

The 22-year-old is expected to retain his place in goals for the visit to Maritzburg United on Sunday afternoon.
