Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has defended the suspension of goalscorer Lorenzo Gordinho for the AmaKhosi’s next match against Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.
Gordinho scored the solitary goal as Chiefs defeated strugglers Highlands Park in Durban to make it five wins on the spin and see the side grab top-spot in the league.
Gordinho was yellow-carded for time-wasting by referee Phelelani Ndaba, which means he sits out the clash with Ajax, but returns for the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates on March 4.
Komphela denied that his side had intentionally sought a booking for Gordinho so that he would avoid suspension against The Buccaneers.
"I don't know what informed your confirmation of (time wasting) but from us we are very professional and fair on our processes," Komphela said.
"That is why Chiefs will always play positive football. We lose a match having given people what they deserve. We just focus on our business.
"What unfolds in matches, you'd never hear us complaining about any other thing; from officials, from this, no, no.
"So we go with our business. We focus on what we do and when 'Tower' [Erick Mathoho] was suspended we didn't come up with excuses, (he was) suspended. It is an opportunity for (Daniel) Cardoso.
"Gordinho now gets suspended and it’s an opportunity for 'Tower' to come back. When you sign 32 players they are all your assets, all must be equally capable to play.”
