NPL sanction three clubs

The Nigeria Premier League have imposed sanctions on Akwa United, Sunshine Stars and Nasarawa United for incidents that took place last weekend.

Akwa United were hit with the hardest punishment; they were fined N15 million and ordered to play their games behind closed doors for denying live broadcast access to SuperSport in their 3-2 win over Bayelsa United.

Sunshine Stars were N500 000 for abandoning their game against Lobi stars in Makurdi following the award of a penalty to the home side.

Nasarawa United, whose fans assaulted match officials, have been banished to the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan for all their home games.

The matches in Ibadan will be played under closed doors.

The decisions are to take immediate effect and will stay in place until the Disciplinary Committee of the NFF meets.

good judgement, but will 3pts be deducted from sunshine since they abandoned the match when the ref blew for a penalty? akwa deserve such fine but i dont think they will be able to pay such amt bcos even if they win the league they cant get up 2 that amount

Sley, I do not know if that judgment has been carried out fairly. An incident that happened last weekend is already decided in mid week? Even if the Nigeria Premier league will hear from both sides, they will not have received the necessary information from the various parties involved.

By the way, I am not supporting the teams involved, but I think 3 or 4 days is not enough to gather adequate information for a decision of N15 million fine magnitude.

@Sley... you make me laugh. How are they going to come up with that amount of money?

Sley: 2009-03-12 06:55

Oscar,
There is nothing to cry foul for in the penalty. The rule has been stated clearly before the commencement of the league. Every club in Nigeria knows that the punishment for denying televison coverage in N15million naira and playing behind closed door. May be their so-called fans will help them raise the money. The same apply to other clubs punished. All the penalties are not new, the clubs know them and they signed to comply with the rule, or they get the sanctions.

@ Mike, I agree that the penalties are known to the teams. But just because the penalty is know, does not mean there should not be investigations before the penalties are announced.

Even in the world, in some countries where there is death penalty, a murderer is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Just because a murderer kills somebody doesnt mean within 3 days he or she is killed.

The penalties had only being implemented uptill the seating of the disciplinary committee where the clubs will be allowed to come and defend themselves. After the seating, the penalties could be downgraded or abolished or the same but I think instead of 15 million they should be fined 30 million Naira with interests!!

The penalties are well deserved and I must say that when evidences are glaring there's no point delaying justice. Akwa United's case isn't a secret and I believe swift punishment to erring clubs is the way to go. Ah ah! Let them borrow and pay the stiff fines and let it serve as a warning to others who'll want to bring the NPL to disrepute.

Akwa United Deserved the punishment being given them. They should also be made to loose 3 pionts to visiting team, They prevented the television crew from filming the match so that they could cheat.
For Nasarawa United they deserved to be banished to Sudan, the show of shame i saw on the telly was very very disgusting.

9ja too funny.. make we ask nff abi obaseki where akwa will get 15million. Chris u tlk well nassarawa should be banished to congo if possible. Akwa should play for stone field. What is the way forward.. i heard the winner of the league takes less than 10million... So how will akwa get 15milion?

JOHNSON OLUDEJI: 2009-03-13 15:05

I HAVE NEVER HEARD NOR SEEN A CLUB BEEN BANISHED IN THE ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE, ITALIA SERIE A OR LA LIGA. AND AFTER THE NFF BANISHMENT OF NASARAWA UNITED, THE NFF STILL ORDER THEIR MATCH TO BE PLAYED UNDER CLOSE DOORS DESPITE PLAYING HUNDREDS OF KILOMETRE AWAY FROM THEIR HOME. THE QUESTION TO ASK IS: IS THERE NO OTHER WEAPON IN THE KITTY OF THE NFF APART FROM BANISHMENT?

It will be too hasty to pass judgements on this incident, i recommend a full scale investigation to know the simple truth. Akwa United is a big club and should know the implications of not allowing TV coverage of their home game. In the interest of Nigerian football, lets be thorough in handling issues like this with no sentiments.Paschal Akwawo, Port Harcourt. 08034701200
