Platinum Stars' Gerald Phiri wants Baroka revenge

Posted: 15 February 2017 Time: 09:52

Platinum Stars newcomer Gerald Phiri aims to build on his debut showing against Orlando Pirates, starting with tonight's clash with bottom-placed Baroka at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Malawian made his Stars bow in a goalless draw with Pirates in Rustenburg last week, having joined the team in January from Bidvest Wits.

Phiri told his club's website: “Most people say I had a great game and that I should look to improve on that performance. As a player I am looking to perform better than I did against Pirates and help the team. It was a great performance but we didn’t get a win. I want to see the team win.”

The 23-year-old insists his side are out for vengeance in Polokwane after losing in the reverse fixture and in the Telkom Knockout to Bakgaga earlier this season.

“We are here to win. That’s our priority,” Phiri said.

“It’s going to be a tough game. They have beaten us twice already so we have to get something out of the game. We have got to get revenge and get three points from them as well. We need three points from everywhere we go. At the moment a loss is not on our minds. The best we can do is three and the least we can do is one point.”

He is adamant Dikwena, in 12th place on the table with 15 points from as many matches, belong at the top end of the standings. Cavin Johnson's outfit finished third in the league last term, earning a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup where they opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Mozambican visitors Uniao Do Songo on the weekend.

“This team should be up there in the top four. We didn’t have a good first half of the season. That’s going to work in our favour because everyone in the team wants to finish on a high. Competition is there in the team. It’s good because it makes the guys to want to push each other. If we push each other and we get on the team, I think we would be unstoppable.”
