SuperSport United were unable to find a way past Elgeco Plus as the first-leg of their CAF Confederations Cup tie at Stade Municipal de Mahamasina in Antananarivo on Sunday finished goalless.
Matsatsantsa enjoyed most of the early possession, and chances, although they were unable to test the goalkeeper in the opening quarter of the tie, with a number of shots flying off the mark for the Pretoria giants.
SuperSport arguably should have taken the lead shortly before half-time following a swift attacking move spearheaded by Michael Morton, who released Thabo Mnyamane on goal, only for the forward to drag his shot agonisingly wide.
Stuart Baxter’s men were let off the hook shortly after the restart as ASSM wasted a guild-edged opportunity from just six yards out, much to the dismay of the home support.
United then had a golden chance of their own 16 minutes from time as Jeremey Brockie found himself clean through on goal, but the forward seemed to lose his composure and fired straight at the goalkeeper.
The chances kept coming for both sides, and it took two brilliant saves from Boafela Pule in the final few minutes to prevent the hosts from snatching what would have proved to be winning goals.
SuperSport United: Pule, Boxall, Daniels, Farmer, Ritchie, Furman (Brockie 65’), Morton, Phala, Mnyamane (Modiba 81’), Mokoena, Lakay
